WFRV CBS 5
1-8-16 @ 5 PM
On January 8, 2016 WFRV CBS 5 was the only station in the market at 5 p.m.to politicize this story about a home-grown terrorist who ambushed a Philadelphia police officer.
Instead of leading with the information that the attacker pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and told police he committed the act in the name of Islam as its competitors did, WFRV buried that information about the attacker and immediately followed it with a sound bite pushing the liberal narrative on the need for more gun control. This is an example of bias by fact placement and spin.
Reasonable people understand that acts of terrorism will not be averted with more gun control laws. WFRV, however, used this story to push the agenda for more gun laws. WFRV was the only station in the market to use a sound bite from the liberal, agenda-driven Mayor of Philadelphia.
WFRV’s competitors each used sound bites from the Chief of Police who discussed the terrorist attack and provided information about the attacker’s ties to ISIS. This is an example of bias by selection of sources.
WFRV also omitted the fact that the gun used in this terrorist attack was stolen. WFRV’s competitors mentioned that fact.
You can read the full text of WFRV’s report below. But first, we show you how competitor WBAY ABC 2 and WLUK FOX 11 each covered this same story. Compare the lead introduction of each station.
WBAY ABC 2
WBAY Anchor: Police in Philadelphia say a man who ambushed a police officer inside a squad car shot him in the name of Islam and had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group …
WBAY Sound Bite from Police Chief: He confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of Islam. According to him, he believed that police defend laws that are contrary to the teachings of the Koran …
WBAY Anchor: … gun used was stolen in 2013 …
WLUK FOX 11
WLUK Anchor: Philadelphia police say the gun used to shoot a police officer as he sat in a squad car was stolen from another officer’s home in 2013 … suspect told officers he was acting in the name of Islam when he ambushed (the officer).
(WLUK followed this story with a story about the backlash President Obama is facing around the nation over his push for more gun control.)
WFRV CBS 5
WFRV Anchor: A Philadelphia police officer is recovering from being shot multiple times after a man ambushed him as he sat in his police car. The officer was able to radio for help after being shot 13 times at point blank range. He was hit three times in the left arm. He managed to shoot back, wounding the suspect. That suspect was arrested several blocks away then just this afternoon we learned that the alleged suspect pledged allegiance to ISIS and admitted that attack was committed in the name of Islam. People with the city say the violence needs to stop.

WFRV Sound Bite with Mayor of Philadelphia: There are too many guns, too many guns on our streets and I think our national government needs to do something about that because our officers and our citizens are in harms way every single day.
WFRV Anchor: There is no word on the suspect’s condition. Officers say he was hit with at least one bullet.
