Defunding Planned Parenthood

We don’t often call for a station to apologize to viewers for its bias. The bias in this case, however, crossed the line. WGBA NBC 26 deceived viewers in its reporting on Planned Parenthood.

WGBA NBC 26 pushed the narrative on Planned Parenthood by suggesting that Governor Walker’s plan to defund Planned Parenthood could hurt women in Northeast Wisconsin. Spin occurs when the story only has one interpretation of an event.

NBC 26 pushed the liberal interpretation here suggesting women need Planned Parenthood for “health care.” This is a false narrative. A close look at Planned Parenthood’s records show a great chunk of its revenues come from abortion and contraception services not so-called “health care” services.

NBC 26 goes so far as to use deceptive editing to push the notion that Planned Parenthood provides the most common women’s health care service, the mammogram. Planned Parenthood, in fact, does not provide mammograms. That is easily verified. More on that in a moment.

First, the NBC 26 reporter comes right out and asks viewers to buy into the question “could (defunding Planned Parenthood) hurt women in Northeast Wisconsin?” NBC 26 doesn’t explore an alternative perspective. How about asking “how will women’s health care expand in your county if Planned Parenthood is defunded?”

The reporter could interview several local women’s health care facility managers about how the Planned Parenthood dollars which could be routed to their facility would help provide free mammograms to their low-income clients. 2016-1-21-WGBA 5pm 10Since Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms, it actually refers women seeking mammograms to these other facilities.

If Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms, why did NBC 26 show images of mammograms in its report? Did NBC 26 intentionally lie to its viewers?

Or did NBC 26 simply assume the liberal narrative was true? Either way, shame on NBC 26!
