- Bias by Omission:
Ignoring facts that reflect negatively on liberal or left-wing views or ignoring facts that support conservative views.
In reporting on the court proceedings against Bo Bergdahl, WLUK mentions that Bergdahl “was released in May of last year as part of a prisoner swap.” WLUK fails, though, to remind viewers of who was involved in that controversial prisoner swap. WLUK omits the fact that President Obama exchanged five senior Taliban leaders for Bergdahl, who is now charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
WLUK also fails to mention that President Obama celebrated Bergdahl’s release with a rose garden ceremony announcement. The media has consistently failed to hold the president accountable for controversial decisions such as this by employing the bias of omission. We wonder whether such facts would be omitted or repeated frequently if a Republican president exchanged 5 suspected terrorists for an Army soldier accused of deserting his unit.

WLUK Anchor: “An Army Sgt. Who was held by the Taliban for 5 years appeared in court on charges of desertion and misbehavior in front of the enemy.
Bo Bergdahl said little during the hearing this morning. He did not enter a plea and did not decide if he wanted to face a court martial in front of a jury or just a judge. Military officials say Bergdahl walked away from his post in Afghanistan in 2009. He was released in May of last year as part of a prisoner swap.
In a podcast interview, Bergdahl said he walked off the base in an effort to warn military officials about what he believed was leadership problems in his unit.”
