Bias by Selection of Sources

Bias by Selection of Sources occurs when a reporter includes more sources in a story who support one view over another.

This report by WFRV CBS 5 focused on an organized protest by a special interest group outside a Republican state senator’s office. The report featured the perspective of the protestors. WFRV did not provide a response from the state senator nor did the station report that it tried to reach out to him for comment.

WFRV CBS 5 Anchor: Supporters of public education continue to speak out against proposed budget cuts.

The focal point of demonstrations in Appleton was Senator Roger Roth’s office on College Avenue. Before heading outside, the Fox Cities Advocates for Public Education met at the Appleton library and voiced their concerns about budget cuts to education.

“We love and support our schools,” Ann Muenster with the Fox Cities Advocates for Public Education said. “We call on legislators to do the right thing and do what’s right for Wisconsin’s children. Our children deserve fair funding for their public schools and their future’s depend on us.”

The demonstration was one of several that took place across the state Monday.
